I journaled to get through my grief when I lost my sweet Bella. It turned into a book as I wanted to share my experience with others who might be going through the same emotions. I found it helpful to read and grieve through words. It was truly a dark period in my life. Losing my darling Yorkie devastated me. I never knew how much grief I would endure during this process. Prior to this time, I hadn’t experienced any losses like this. I needed something comforting right away to take the pain away. I felt it would never go away. I couldn’t find anything on the internet and wasn’t in a state to drive anywhere including a bookstore. I needed comfort and I needed it fast to restore balance during and after my grieving period. The holidays bring up sadness for many people. Some have lost loved ones during this time and others have memories that surface and trigger feelings.
These are a few ways I learned to help others heal:
- Show them you care by being a good listener.
- Allow the grieving person to cry in front of you. No judgment means so much.
- Don’t offer advice to someone who is grieving, but do let them know you are there for them.
- Help complete the basic tasks: cook a meal, do their grocery shopping, put gas in their car, etc. Small things like these make the biggest impact especially when someone is in deep pain.
- Go with them to a support group
- Offer them a comforting book, poem, or flowers
